Nine people are dead, perhaps 15 people are injured, and a reported two or three gunmen are on the run in a shooting that started at a McDonald’s across the street from Munich’s Olympia-Einkaufszentrum (OEZ) Shopping Center. Germany’s elite counterterrorism unit, Border Protection Group 9, is in the city, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Bild reported.
The situation is still unclear and confused, but police have called the attack “an acute terror threat.” There were reports of gunfire inside the mall as well, CNN reported, citing witnesses. One of the gunmen may have committed suicide. Witnesses have reported that attackers were shouting slogans against foreigners, with one saying that he was born in Germany.
Public transit has been suspended, and the Munich train station has been closed. People have been instructed to stay indoors and not to take photos of police activities.
