Extensive post-hurricane flooding in North Carolina has already killed an estimated five million chickens so far, Reuters has reported. The report said that Sanderson Farms has reported a loss of 250,000 chickens, while Tyson Foods estimated that its losses would be minimal because its broiler chicken operations were not in flooded areas. Perdue Farms is reviewing its loss, Reuters reported. The flooding is also expected to affect the pits in central and eastern parts of the state where hog waste is usually stored, the secretary of NC Department of Environmental Quality told Reuters.
