Restaurant chains are slowing or suspending development because new units are opening to unexpectedly lower sales volumes, notes Restaurant Business magazine’s digital editor, Peter Romeo. Chains he cites as slowing expansion are Chipotle (whose outlook has been complicated by a widespread food poisoning event), Papa Murphy’s, Red Robin, Noodles & Company and Texas Roadhouse. The chains are expanding but are planning to open fewer new restaurants in the coming year. Red Robin, for example, cut its prior goal of 30 new units to 16.
