Food safety risks, costs, waste likely to increase in ‘clean’ era: Two veteran food science and human nutrition experts at Iowa State University are worried about food safety eroding and food waste piling up because of millennials’ demands for “clean food.” ISU Professors Ruth MacDonald and Ruth Litchfield say the individual choices food manufacturers are making to make “clean label” claims are having negative consequences when it comes to food safety, food waste and costs. Clean labels refer to declarations on food made without additives, preservatives or chemicals. MacDonald and Litchfield fear too many decisions to remove additives are being made for marketing reasons alone without considering whether they increase food safety risks. READ MORE

Gourmet Indian food company recalls product due to possible Listeria contamination: Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Foods, a Hayward, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 264 pounds of chicken tikka masala products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The cooked ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken tikka masala items were produced on Nov. 7, 2017. Yorgo’s Foods recalls two products for Listeria risk: Yorgo Foods Inc. is recalling select varieties of its “Hommus” and “Baba Ghannouj” because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The problem was discovered by Food and Drug Administration inspectors during environmental sampling at the Manchester, NH, facility, which identified Listeria in the processing environment. The FDA is advising that no one should consume the implicated products. Farms now required to report air emissions: Barring a delay from a federal court, beginning yesterday between 60,000 and 100,000 livestock and poultry operations are mandated to file a report regarding on-farm air emissions. The reporting is mandatory for farms that exceed the reporting threshold of 100 pounds total of either ammonia or hydrogen sulfide in any 24-hour period at least once annually. On Oct. 27, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued preliminary guidance documents that outlined reporting obligations for livestock operators under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Emergency Planning & Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).
