Auburn University is expanding its research, education, workforce development and economic development in the growing cyber security field.
AUFSI core faculty member Dr. Bob Norton is faculty liaison to the Auburn Cyber Initiative, which is headed by retired Lt. Gen. Ron Burgess. Burgess is the former director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency and now serves as senior counsel for Auburn’s cyber, national security and military programs.
Norton, the director of the university’s Open Source Intelligence Lab, is an expert at data mining and database management. Among his interests are protecting the nation’s food supply from threats and tracking foodborne illness outbreaks.
The Alabama State Legislature recently approved $1 million for Auburn’s cyber security center. Norton, who trains Auburn students and industry officials, said educating a workforce prepared to defend against cyber crimes is a priority.
